Penis Envy is an exceptionally potent variety of the psychedelic mushroom species Psilocybe cubensis, known for its distinctive phallic appearance and powerful psychoactive effects. While the history is partly folkloric, it is widely believed to have originated from a mutation isolated by mycologists in the 1970s.

Appearance

Unlike typical Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms that develop umbrella-like caps, the Penis Envy strain has a unique morphology.

• Thick, dense stem: The stout, dense stipe (stem) is the defining feature, giving the mushroom a phallic shape.

• Underdeveloped cap: The cap is often small, rounded, and pale. It may not open fully, remaining close to the stem.

• Minimal spores: Penis Envy mushrooms are known for their low spore production. Many specimens are sterile or nearly so, making them more challenging to cultivate and source than other varieties.

• Blue bruising: Like other psilocybin mushrooms, the flesh turns blue when bruised, which indicates the presence of psychoactive alkaloids like psilocin.

Potency and effects

The Penis Envy strain is among the most potent varieties of P. cubensis.

Psilocybe natalensis is a relatively rare and recently described species of psychedelic mushroom from South Africa, closely related to the well-known Psilocybe cubensis.

Here’s what’s notable about it:

1. Origin & Discovery

• First formally described in 1995 by mycologist Jochen Gartz and colleagues.

• Native to KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa — hence the name natalensis.

• Naturally grows in subtropical grasslands, often in sandy soils enriched with animal dung.

2. Appearance

• Cap: 2–6 cm, convex when young, flattening with age, caramel to golden-brown when moist, fading to pale yellowish when dry.

• Gills: Purple-brown to black with age, attached to the stem.

• Stem: Slender, whitish to yellowish, bruises blue when damaged.

• Bruising: Blue coloration indicates the presence of psilocybin.

3. Chemistry & Potency
